On Valentine's Day, 1991, I got a phone call from a friend. A woman living in her building had stolen her credit
card and purchased two cats, some birds and a dog from a pet store using the card. The woman had been arrested the prior
weekend, while my friend was out of town. The police released the woman on bail, she came home and threw the two cats
outdoors (in the middle of winter!), put the dog in the hallway of the building and left town. My friend told me that
animal control was coming the next morning for the dog. Nobody in the building had taken the poor thing in. Did
I want her?

Heidi And I Find Each Other
I went with my eleven year old daughter Rachel to pick up the dog. When we opened the building door, the hallway
was dark. I heard a whimpering, and made several kissing noises. A small bundle of fur launched itself into my
arms. There was no question of keeping her!
Heidi was a quick learner. She was housebroken in two weeks. She learned how to shake hands, lie down, dance
on her hind legs, and speak. She would always come at my whistle.
